The Department of Health (DOH) is calling on parents to vaccinate children under two years old against measles and rubella, following a 35% spike in cases during the first two months of 2025.
From January 1 to March 1, the DOH recorded 922 measles-rubella cases, up from 683 in the same period in 2024. The National Capital Region, along with Cordillera, Ilocos, Bicol, Western Visayas, and Soccsksargen, saw the largest increases in new cases between February 2 and March 1.
A concerning 68% (625 cases) of those infected were unvaccinated, according to DOH data.
Health officials emphasized that measles is highly contagious, with a single child potentially infecting up to 16 others. The disease can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain infections, and even death, especially in children under five.
To prevent further spread, the DOH is urging:
- Complete measles-rubella vaccinations for children
- Frequent handwashing
- Proper cough etiquette and mask-wearing
- Maintaining clean environments
