Cordillera Region Honors Lives Lost to AIDS, Pushes HIV Awareness in Candlelight Memorial

BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Health – Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR) joined the global observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, a solemn event held annually to remember those who have died from AIDS and support individuals living with HIV.

This year’s ceremony also underscored the region’s commitment to achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 goal by 2030: 95% of people with HIV should know their status, 95% of those diagnosed should receive treatment, and 95% of those treated should achieve viral suppression.

As of 2024, the Cordillera region estimates 2,400 individuals living with HIV. Of this, 1,236 (52%) have been diagnosed, 888 (72%) are receiving treatment, and 552 (62%) have reached viral suppression—a rate among the highest in the Philippines.

“These figures reflect the dedication of local government units, community partners, and volunteers,” said Darwin F. Babon, program manager for HIV and STI prevention in the region.

The event also served to promote sexual health awareness. DOH-CAR encouraged the use of condoms, regular HIV testing, honest communication with partners, and accessing reliable healthcare services.

Free HIV testing, treatment, and counseling are available in the region. “A positive HIV test is not the end. Treatment allows you to live a healthy, normal life,” Babon emphasized.

The memorial serves as a powerful reminder that each statistic represents a real person, and everyone can play a role in ending the HIV epidemic and the stigma attached to it.
